On the Job
Since the beginning of the labor movement, unions and activists have fought for and won: an eight-hour workday, minimum wage, health care coverage, child labor laws, improved workplace conditions and laws against discrimination. Whether at the worksite or at the Capitol, OSEA continues to fight―for both private and public employees―to maintain rights, achieve equity, negotiate contracts and assist employees with on-the-job issues.
Every OSEA chapter has an assigned field representative who provides a myriad of services to OSEA members including: representation for grievances; resolution of contract violations; filing of unfair labor practices; and aiding with workers’ compensation, unemployment benefits and arbitration. Protected by law
Many violations of the law and many dangers to public health and safety go unreported because people who know about them are afraid of retaliation. As our livelihoods-and often our health insurance-are dependent on our jobs, the fear of losing a job is pervasive.
Whenever the law provides a remedy for victims of retaliation, it encourages employees to come forward with evidence that will make our world safer, healthier and more just.
Many laws that protect workers, such as antidiscrimination laws, wage and hour protections and health and safety laws, also make it illegal for an employer to retaliate against someone who engages in conduct which the law protects.
Many laws protecting the public at large, such as environmental laws, taxpayer-funded programs and government regulation of certain industries, such as nuclear power, trucking and airlines, protect employees who disclose information that the employee reasonably believes is evidence of illegality, gross waste or fraud, gross mismanagement, abuse of power, or a substantial and specific danger to public health and safety.
When you are experiencing problems at work, it is hard to know what to do or who to go to in order to get issues resolved. Just know that OSEA is here for you with information and guidance should you need it.
